Abduction and its Distinctions

چکیده
What distinguishes abductive inference from other modes of inference? What distinguishes the different forms of abductive inference? These are perhaps the key questions that face the student of abduction, and the core of Lorenzo Magnani’s book is devoted to them. The book contains, among other things, a defence of several putative distinctions, and it touches on an impressively wide range of perspectives, citing much of the relevant work in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Alas, abductive inference is curiously resistant to sharp distinctions, as I shall attempt to explain. C.S. Peirce used the term abduction to refer to the process of reasoning to explanation:

Towards a formalization of the Spatial Semantic Hierarchy
The Spatial Semantic Hierarchy (SSH) comprises a set of distinct representations of space, each with its own ontology, each with its own mathematical foundation, and each abstracted from the levels below it. In particular, the SSH topological level is abstracted from the SSH causal level. The method used to abstract the SSH topological level has usually been dened as an abduction task, describe...

متن کاملGeneralization with Taxonomic Information
This paper studies sorted generalization-the generalization, with respect to an arbitrary taxonomic theory, of atomic formulas containing sorted variables. It develops an algorithm for the task, discusses the algorithm and task complexity, and presents semantic properties of sorted generalization. Based on its semantic properties, we show how sorted generalization is applicable to such problems...
متن کاملTranslation by Abduction
Machine Translation and World Knowledge. Many existing approaches to machine translation take for granted that the information presented in the output is found somewhere in the input, and, moreover, that such information should be expressed at a single representational level, say, in terms of the parse trees or of \semantic" assertions. Languages, however, not only express the equivalent inform...

his discovery does not work. His heliocentric view allowed him to think that the sun, so near to the center of the planetary system, and so large, must somehow cause the planets to move as they do. In addition to this strong conjecture, he also had to generalize his findings for Mars to all planets by assuming that the same physical conditions could be obtained throughout the solar system.
